MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy is on the line when West Virginia plays host to Syracuse Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Milan Puskar Stadium. The noon homecoming game will be televised on ESPNU (Dave Armstrong and Larry Coker).

This is the 56th meeting between these two longtime Eastern rivals. Syracuse owns a 30-25 all-time advantage. Ben Schwartzwalder played at West Virginia University and later coached at Syracuse where he led the Orange to the 1959 national championship. The trophy was first presented in 1993, the year of his death.

Saturday’s ESPNU coverage will reach more than 21 million homes through long-term carriage agreements with Tim Warner, Charter, Cox, DIRECTV (channel 609), EchoStar’s DISH Network (Channel 148), Verizon, AT&T, Insight Communications, Mediacom and other affiliates.

In West Virginia, fans in the southern part of the state can access ESPNU through Suddenlink. TimeWarner in the Clarksburg-Fairmont area also offers ESPNU.

MSN’s radio coverage begins with the Mountaineers Today at 11:30 am. Internet users can access the live broadcast through MountaineerTV and CBS College Sports; Sirius satellite radio listeners can get the broadcast on channel 122.

Here is Saturday’s Countdown to Kickoff:

10 – Quarterback Pat White has TEN career rushing touchdowns of 40 yards or longer. White’s long touchdown run was 76 yards produced against South Florida during his freshman year in 2005.

9 –Pat White is tied with South Florida’s Matt Grothe for the Big East lead with NINE touchdown passes. White presently ranks third in school history with 44 career TD passes.

8 – Slot receiver Jock Sanders had a career-high EIGHT receptions against Marshall on Sept. 27. Sanders has caught at least one touchdown pass in all three home games so far this year and the sophomore leads the team in receptions (24) and touchdown catches (four).

7 – The Mountaineer defense has allowed only SEVEN 100-yard rushers in their last 43 games dating back to the 2005 season.

6 – West Virginia has won the last SIX meetings between Syracuse including three straight at Milan Puskar Stadium – 34-7 in 2002, 27-6 in 2004 and 41-17 in 2006. It is the longest winning streak by either team in series play.

5 – The West Virginia defense has forced FIVE fumbles this year. John Holmes leads the way with two forced fumbles. JT Thomas, Reed Williams and Doug Slavonic have each forced one fumble.

4 – The Mountaineers have lost only FOUR of its last 22 Big East games dating back to 2005. Two of those four losses have come in Morgantown.

3 – Syracuse has either been tied or ahead in THREE of its four losses this season. The only game the Orange was never in was its 55-13 loss to Penn State.

2 – West Virginia has lost only TWICE in its last 47 games since 2002 when winning the turnover battle. This year the Mountaineers have a slight 8-6 advantage in turnover margin.

1 – Kicker Pat McAfee now ranks FIRST in career scoring among kickers in WVU history with 329 points. McAfee also is tops in career extra points attempted (190) and extra points made (188).
